From In Weather: The Hidden Valley

Hidden Song

4′:53″ Voice, Gumnut, Flies, Frogs, and Flute, recorded on moulded white Rocks that flow towards the belly of the Hidden Valley, Budawang Mountains, Yuin Nation, 23/11/2021.

Streaming

15′:20″ – with the low Northwest corner of the Hidden Valley, where Swamp transforms into Stream, 23/11/2021. Jim Denley – flute, Aviva Endean – clarinets, plastic tubes, pocket amplifier, Adam Gottlieb – trees.

Tones of Stone

18′:31″ – The form of Buran (cave) acts as a giant pinna, a parabolic dish, concentrating distant soundwaves and bringing them to Microphones – Buran listens – and also as a giant horn projecting sounds into the larger acoustic. Hidden Valley 24/11/2021. Jim Denley – flutes and stones, Aviva Endean – clarinets, plastic tubes, pocket amplifier and stones, Adam Gottlieb – stones and trees.

Drips

3′: 49″ – 23/11/2021. Aviva Endean – clarinet and Adam Gottlieb – drips and trees. Not quite forming a waterfall, Adam co-creates with drips, using cups, plates, and billies – part washing-up, part shower, part polyrhythmic musicking.

From With Weather Volune 2: Gadigal Country

Storm: RB

20′:02″ – 10/2/2022 with Rushcutters Bay, where Murungal’s (Thunder) claps domed over an omnidirectional sonic horizon from the depths of the Harbour to the Mangrove Swamps of Paramatta River, the Eastern coastal Cliffs and Beaches to Colomatta (Blue Mountains) to the West, from the Coves and Inlets of Dyarubbin (Hawkesbury River) of the North, to the Shores of Deeban (Hacking River) to the South. In contrast, barking or fluting seemingly sing-up just part of Rushcutters Bay, and Rain-droplets spacetime a micro-horizon, although, in the skewed perspectives that audio-ing generates, each Droplet attains, through proximity to Mic, a material status equivalent with Murungal’s massive energy.

Wharf: RB

8′:15″ – 15/12/2021 Rushcutters Bay, Gadigal Country. Fluting counterpoints a bass voice generated by wave energies as they play Wharf.

Critter Pond: TP

11′:30″ – 4/11/2022 with Trumper Park Pond, Gadigal Country. Using Flute, Hydrophone. air Mics, and Headphones there is intra-play with creatures below Pond’s surface.

Kids: TP

22′: 12″ – 8/7/2021. Also recorded with Trumper Park Pond, an almost operatic scene plays out with Kids, Dogs, fluting, Avian, and Aircraft musickin.

Wugan: NP

11′:58″ – the morning of the 29/10/2021 with Neilson Park. Gadigal Country, a Wugan couple (crow) swoop down, perch on a branch above me, look me in the eye, and join the discourse.

Currawong: TP

9′:56″ – 20/8/2021, with Trumper Park, Gadigal Country and a conference of Currawong. One bird performs very close to Microphone.

From As Weather Volume 3: Budawang Mountains

Diffraction Study 1

19′:48″ – 13/12/2022 with Ravine, Monolith Valley, Budawang Mountains, Yuin Country. The photo below is of Creek who cuts Ravine, Monolith Valley, Budawang Mountains. Ravine is one of my favourite musickin.

Diffraction Study 2

15′:50″ – 14/12/2022 with Ravine, Monolith Valley, Budawang Mountains, Yuin Country.

Volcano Body

5′:43″ – 13/12/2022 with Mt Cole camping cave, Budawang Mountains. Michel Serres writes that the voice; “comes from the earth, through the intermediary of the volcano-body. The soul is a life-sized wind instrument.”

Cicadas

A short film using still images and a recording from the Hidden Valley, 28-31 October 2020.
